Poem for Children
Like a cake the world is frosted
with snow and ice.
Polar bears walks across its top
wearing furry sandals,
placing each rear paw in the precise spot
its front paw made,
leaving perfect spaces in which to place
the birthday candles.
Behind the Poem
This is one of many poems I've written about Inuit bear sculptures. I love the respect the artists have for each bear they carve. This particuilar carving, by Pudalik Shaa, spoke to me because of the precise placement of the bear's paws, the two right-side paws mirroring one another, the two left-side paws doing the same. — Bg
